Uganda has the sixth highest number of annual deaths from malaria and some of the highest transmission rates worldwide. With about 95% of the country endemic, clinically diagnosed malaria cases are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the country. Malaria incidence trend has shown an increase along with prevalence rates. Released in 2014, the Uganda Malaria Reduction Strategic Plan (UMRS 2014-2020) has three malaria elimination objectives to achieve by 2020:

  • Reduce annual malaria deaths from the 2013 levels to near 0
  • Reduce malaria morbidity to 30 cases per 1000 population
  • Reduce the malaria parasite prevalence to less than 7%
